Fun Friday - go see The Smurfs in 3D - Opening in theares today!

So what to do this Friday?
Let's see, my daughter keeps asking about the Smurfs movie!
Funny how that cartoon was so popular in the 80s and now there is a movie and our kids want to see it!
What's cool about these movies is that the voices or the actors are ones that the parents are familiar with!
Plus there's always good music.
I wasn't really into the Smurfs, but, the movie looks fun.
I like Neil Patrick Harris (aka Doogie Howser, MD) is the main 'human' in the movie.
Was surprised that Katy Perry is the voice of the 'Smurfette'!
Hank Azaria is also one of the voices, as is George Lopez and Pee Wee Herman!
No matter what the critics say, you should go see it (with or without) the kids!

Here are some movie coupons too:

Thoughtful Thursday :)

I admit, didn't know what to write about today....been having a lot of  'thoughts' running around in my own head.  Started to look for some quotes and such and found this one.  I know I may have posted it on FB before, but I think it says a lot and it is very true!

"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. "
~Leo Buscaglia

So please smile at somebody today that may look like they need it, give a compliment, do something nice.  Not only will it make the other person feel wonderful, it will do the same for YOU!

Have a Thoughtful Thursday!
Luv,
Mare

Whatever Happened to Wednesday - Leif Garrett

Leif Garrett, another 70s Teen Idol!
What happened to him??
I don't really remember what he was in or what he sang, I only remembered him being on the cover of Tiger Beat Magazine!!!
LOL!
Well I posted his official website above, but Leif led one of those train wreck lives :(

Here is his bio on his official website that is posted above:
Leif Garrett burst onto the scene in 1966 at the early age of five. Garrett began a career in acting with his debut in the quintessential period film, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. He starred in over sixty hit television shows, such as being the semi-regular on the critically acclaimed hit television shows, The Waltons and Family. But it was his portrayal of a pony express rider in the television special, Peter Lundy and the Medicine Hat Stallion that garnered Garrett the honor of being inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame. From then on he continued to do more tv and film including Walking Tall and the hit television series, Three for the Road. This family drama was Garrett’s launching pad for the recording phenomena that was to occur.

Having achieved success as an actor, Garrett took on the music industry. He became a multi-gold and platinum recording artist and one of the biggest teen idols of all time, gracing magazine covers all over the world. In 1977, Garrett released his self-titled debut album and climbed the music charts with his remakes of 'Runaround Sue' #13 and ‘Surfin’ USA’ #20.  In 1978 he recorded a second album entitled Feel The Need. The sophomore release quickly became a chart-topper with his hit, ‘I Was Made For Dancin” going all the way to the Top 10. Leif Garrett became an international star performing concerts for tens of thousands of fans.

After releasing three more albums, Garrett decided to turn his attentions to acting once again, co-starring in Francis Ford Coppola’s film classic, The Outsiders in 1983. He continued to choose other notable roles in the eighties in movies such as Thunder Alley and Shaker Run. In 1991, Garrett appeared with fellow former teen idol, David Cassidy, in the seventies spoof, Spirit of ’76. Audiences were amazed and impressed with Garrett’s comedic ability and talent.

It was in 1998 when the music arena became reacquainted with Leif Garrett on VH1’s highly acclaimed Behind The Music series. The response from the viewing public was sensational and it has become one of the highest rated episodes of “Behind The Music”. He later formed a few rock bands and toured across the USA.

These days Garrett is concentrating on his acting career, but still continues to write and record new music. He wrote, produced and performed the title track  for David Spade’s hit comedy, Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, in which Garrett portrayed himself. During 2006 and 2007 he was part of the Original Idols Tour and performed across America. His latest album, Three Sides Of…. was released in 2007 and includes originals, covers and a remake of his classic hit, ‘I Was Made For Dancin’’. In 2010 he was invited to perform several concerts in South Korea marking the first time he’s returned there in thirty years.

Personal live and what is going on now From Wikipedia  Leif Wikipedia

Beginning in 1979 Garrett dated English actress Nicolette Sheridan; the two split six years later.[5] Two decades later Garrett credited Sheridan for helping him at the start of his career, and said of her "She's a special person in my life."[6]

In 1979, three days before his 18th birthday, Garrett crashed his car while under the influence of Quaaludes and alcohol.[7] The accident left his passenger and best friend Roland Winkler a paraplegic.[8] Although Garrett publicly promised to look after Winkler, the Winkler family filed a $25 million negligence lawsuit against him.[9] Garrett insisted that he did not have the money, and the suit was eventually settled out of court for $7.1 million,[9] leaving the friends estranged until Winkler was approached by VH1 to film a 1999 episode of the television series Behind The Music. The episode featured Garrett's reunion with an apology to Winkler.[9]

On January 14, 2006, Garrett was arrested on a Los Angeles subway platform for allegedly not having a ticket.[10] Authorities found heroin in his possession and held him without bail after discovering a warrant for his arrest for violating probation from a previous cocaine arrest.[10]

On May 11, 2006, Garrett was sentenced to three years' probation and a 90-day jail sentence after he failed to complete a court-ordered live-in drug rehabilitation program.[10]

On February 1, 2010, Garrett was arrested again for possession of narcotics. After denying having any drugs in his possession, he finally admitted to police that he had black tar heroin in his shoe.[7] He posted $10,000 bail and was charged with a felony count of heroin possession.[11] On October 18, 2010, Leif Garrett pleaded no contest to heroin possession in Los Angeles and entered a court-ordered rehab program.[12]

Oh Leif, why, why, why..you were such a cutie!
Have a great Wednesday!

Mare

Life According to Damaris

Tuesday Tip! GREEK YOGURT!

I don't know about you, but I'm a dipper!  I love to dip snack foods into something creamy!  But we all know those creamy dips are filled with unwanted calories!  There is a substitute ladies and gentlemen and you probably would never think of it unless I told you.  Sure you can get the tasteless low fat or no fat sour cream, but, did you ever try Greek Yogurt??
Not only is it a sour cream substitute, but cream, mayonnaise or cream cheese sub as well!
Why you ask?  Because I said so, no, just kidding!
  • It contains more protein!
  • It is lower in fat!
  • It contains less sugar!
  • It is lower in carbs!
  • It is easier to digest
  • It is dense and so high in protein it keeps you fuller longer!
Check out the link for some more information, uses and recipes!
Personally, I like Chobani Yogurt and it is available in most supermarkets:  Link to Chobani Yogurt
But, I will admit that I buy what's on sale or what I may have a coupon for!
So always look for a healthier substitute!
That's my Tuesday Tip!

Mare

Motivate Me Monday - Don't Quit a poem by an unknown author

Don't Quit

by: Unknown Author
When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit.
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns
As every one of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out:
Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are.
It may be near when it seems so far:
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.
I found a few motivational poems and wanted to share this one.  I know Mondays are hard, especially after a busy, summer weekend!  On Saturday, we lost power for 8 hrs, so didn't get much sleep and I really need motivation today to get going!
But this is so true, never quit!  Something I hope I am instilling in my daughter.  Hopefully you're all motivated this Monday!  And never quit!
Luv,
Mare

Sentimental Saturday.....on time..check it out today, it relates to the hair picture posted yesterday!

When I was young, my hair was very long.  In fact, by the time I was 8 and in 3rd grade, it was past my butt!  One day my mom brought us for haircuts at the local 'beauty palor' (hey, that's what they were called back then, not salons!) .  The 'beautician' (again, a 70s term for what we call now a hair stylist), who also happened to be the owner.  Her name was Stella and of course that was the name of the shop.  She told my mother that I would be bald in a few years if I kept my hair this long because it was thick and heavy, she said it was thinning on top.  The hair's weight was pulling it out at the roots.

Of course my mom flipped and had her cut it.  I went from Crystal Gayle/Cher hair to a Carol Brady SHAG!  Everyone was shocked when I went back to school!   I don't recall, but I probably cried a river!

After that, kept my hair at shoulder length, then the Farrah do's and feathers were in, then the perms....so like any other girl, I sported most of the 'in hairstyles' (except the Dorothy Hamil do).

Now 30+ years later, my hair is reaching my waist.  Then I saw my friend and co-worker Terri, her hair got very long again and she said she was going to donate it to Locks of Love.  Locks of Love

The light bulb went on.  Here is my mother fighting cancer again.  I keep hearing of too many people fighting this horrible disease as well.  I am going to do it too.  I am going to donate my locks!

I saw my hairdresser today and she said I have a few more inches to go.  She trimmed me up a bit and we'll keep an eye on it!  It will be like de ja vu!  I am sure I'll be crying again, but not because I am losing my hair, because I know I'll be helping a child fighting cancer regain their self esteem, feel pretty and confident!
Keep cool on this Sentimental Saturday.
Luv,
Mare
The first pic was taken Friday after Lynda (my hairdresser) trimmed and styled me up!
The next is 2nd grade, but you can see how long my hair was getting already!

Fun Friday!

It's been a sizzling summer thus far and tomorrow is going to be the hottest day of the week!
So since it's going to be a Hot Friday, we need to think about cooling off.
I have a great idea to combine having a little 'FUN' and keeping cool at the same time (and I'm not talking skinny dipping here!).
What am I talking about do you ask?
Well... make your own adult version of an ICE POP!
Making them is half the FUN this FRIDAY!
  1. Get one of those plastic ice pop molds.
  2. Fill it 1/4 (or 1/2) of the way with your favorite mixer, I suggest DEVOTION VODKA!
  3. Add your your favorite flavor now, I suggest vitamin water, they all come in great flavors and have vitamins!  Or you can add lemonade or OJ, but add a little water.
  4. FREEZE!
  5. ENJOY!
ps..kids can have the same fun with a virgin version!  and don't let them get your ADULT version by accident~!!!!  :)
Let me know what flavor you made!
    Have a Fun Friday!
    Luv,
    Mare

Thougthful Thursday....It's the little things that matter.....

I wrote this last May (May18, 2010 to be exact) and I wish I could go back to that point in time for so many reasons....but I digress (as usual).  You may have already seen this on Facebook last May, it was a note on my profile and I decided to 'dig it up'.
Just remember that it's the little things that matter......

a kind word from a stranger
a fresh baked cookie from a neighbor
    a flower from your lover
a recipe passed down from your mother
a homemade card from your child
a friend that still says your 'wild'
these are the things that make me smile
and let's you know that it's all worth while....
    Have a Thoughtful Thursday!
    Luv,
    Mare <3

Whatever Happened to Wednesday - Bobby Sherman

Well you know what day it is folks and you must see a pattern going on here!
    70s sitcom 'teen idols'!
Yes, I did have a little crush on Bobby too and he was on one of the Partridge Family shows!
Do you remember what songs he sang?
At least he has a respectable career and he didn't turn into a train wreck like so many of the teen idols.  Bobby served as Captain on the LAPD, teaching CPR & First Aid and most recently as Sheriff on the San Bernadino Police Department.
So let's hear it for Bobby!!!!
Check out the link above to find out more, including a video of him singing 'Little Woman'.
I prefer 'Julie, Julie, Julie'...maybe that's why I named my black stuffed animal cat Julie!  LOL!
    Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

    Tuesday Tip!

Tuesday, Tuesday, non-descript day!  Decided to change it up and have Tuesday Tip!  The tip may be about everything and anything, but probably most likely healthy stuff!
As the first tip, let's start in the morning!  I've always heard that water with lemon helps you lose weight.  Even years ago when I was a teen dieting!  Yes, I feel like I've been dieting all my life!  But there are many benefits to drinking water with lemon.  Instead OJ in the am, I'm now drinking water with lemon.  I figure I still get my dose of Vitamin C, plus I understand it cleanses you!!  Of course you need to keep the pantry stocked with lemons!  Check out the link above with other benefits.
Another 'tip' to get your weigh loss goals started, start slow.  You're not going to lose 10 lbs in 1 week!  Instead of soda (yes even diet which has sodium in it!), just drink water, with out without lemon!  Can you imagine how many calories alone that will save you?  Don't think a drink isn't filled with calories, because most of them are!
Oh, and on a hot and humid day like today, water with lemon is refreshing and will cool you off!  Staying hydrated also keeps you full!
    Happy Tuesday!
    Luv,
    Mare

Motivate Me - There's 1 person who always does it for me!

It was a beautiful weekend weather wise and today is just as gorgeous! But Mondays are still hard, especially if you had a tiring weekend. Many are motivated by music, so today, while driving to work or whatever you are doing, put on your favorite artist!
If you know me, you know who my favorite is.... ;) So I think some of Bon Jovi music may motivate me today!

If you read my post yesterday, you know it was 1 year since my mother had surgery and was diagnosed with colon cancer. As I drove to the hospital every night, there was a companion that was with me and kept me going. Jon, Richie, Tico and Dave were playing their new album for me, "The Circle". The music helped keep me sane. I have to say, Jon has been there for me since 1986!!! I feel like whenever there is something going on, he is there for me! Sounds 'silly', but it's true. They got me through a horrible break up and like I said, more recently my mom's heath issues.

The link are a few of Jon's quotes to check out! So between the quotes and the music, I think I have my motivation for this Monday!

    Mare
